Female speech was more often represented in theatrical productions through women characters written and enacted by men. In Spoken Like a Woman, the first book-length study of women's speech in classical drama, Laura McClure explores the discursive practices attributed to women of fifth-century b.c. Greece and to what extent these representations reflected a larger reality. Examining tragedies and comedies by a variety of authors, she illustrates how the dramatic poets exploited speech conventions among both women and men to construct characters and to convey urgent social and political issues.

From gossip to seductive persuasion, women's verbal strategies in the theater potentially subverted social and political hierarchy, McClure argues, whether the women characters were overtly or covertly duplicitous, in pursuit of adultery, or imitating male orators. Such characterization helped justify the regulation of women's speech in the democratic polis. The fact that women's verbal strategies were also used to portray male transvestites and manipulators, however, suggests that a greater threat of subversion lay among the spectators' own ranks, among men of uncertain birth and unscrupulous intent, such as demagogues skilled in the art of persuasion. Traditionally viewed as outsiders with ambiguous loyalties, deceitful and tireless in their pursuit of eros, women provided the dramatic poets with a vehicle for illustrating the dangerous consequences of political power placed in the wrong hands.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】
"[An] exhaustively detailed account of the life of Madam C.J. Walker." Booklist, Starred Review

Madam C. J. Walkerーreputed to be America’s first self-made woman millionaireーhas long been celebrated for her rags-to-riches story. Born to former slaves in the Louisiana Delta in the aftermath of the Civil War, married at fourteen, and widowed at twenty, Walker spent the first decades of her life as a laundress, laboring in conditions that paralleled the lives of countless poor and working-class African American women. By the time of her death in 1919, however, Walker had refashioned herself into one of the most famous African American figures in the nation: the owner and president of a hair-care empire and a philanthropist wealthy enough to own a country estate near the Rockefellers in the prestigious New York town of Irvington-on-Hudson. In this biography, Erica Ball places this remarkable and largely forgotten life story in the context of Walker’s times. Ball analyzes Walker’s remarkable acts of self-fashioning, and explores the ways that Walker (and the Walker brand) enabled a new generation of African Americans to bridge the gap between a nineteenth-century agrarian past and a twentieth-century future as urban-dwelling consumers.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】
The CompTIA Linux+/LPIC-1 Training and Exam Preparation Guide, First Edition is a comprehensive resource designed and written with one fundamental goal in mind: teach Linux in an easy and practical manner while preparing for the Linux+/LPIC-1 exams. This book provides an in-depth coverage of all official exam objectives.

This book is organized in two parts: Part One covers LX0-103/101-400 exam objectives and Part Two covers LX0-104/102-400 exam objectives. The book includes hands-on examples, step-by-step exercises, chapter-end review of concepts, files, and commands learned, and 790 challenging practice questions.

This book uses “learn-by-doing” methodology. It begins with guidance on how to download a virtualization software and two Linux distribution versions and then provides instructions on how to create VMs and install Linux in them to set up a lab environment for hands-on learning. Throughout the book, appropriate command prompts are employed to identify the lab system and user to run a command. Each command and task presented in the book was actually performed and tested on lab systems.

Followed by the lab environment setup in Part One, the book presents the essentials of Linux incl. interaction with Linux, basic commands, file management (permissions, ownership, linking, searching, special permissions, editing), filter programs, regex, shell features, and process handling. Subsequent topics focus on system administration incl. shared libraries, Debian and RPM package management, system boot and initialization, hardware management, kernel modules, storage partitioning, file system creation and repairs, quota handling, and swap space administration. This brings Part One to an end and you should be able to take the quiz in Appendix A to test your readiness for the LX0-103/101-400 exam.

Part Two covers all the objectives for the LX0-104/102-400 exam. It covers shell scripts with a presentation and line-by-line analysis of several scripts. Building a simple SQL database and performing queries comes next. A detailed comprehension of local authentication files, user creation, password aging, and shell startup files follows. The book covers networking concepts, reference models, and terms that accompany exercises on interface configuration, hostname change, and route management. A discussion of network testing and debugging tools is furnished and their usage is demonstrated, followed by topics on internationalization, localization, time synchronization, name resolution, X Window, display/desktop managers, accessibility options, printer and print queue administration, task scheduling, system logging, system and service access controls, emailing and email aliasing, searching for special files, and so on. This brings Part Two to an end and you should be able to take the quiz in Appendix C to test your readiness for the LX0-104/102-400 exam.

Highlights:
* 100% coverage of ALL official exam objectives (version 4.0)

* Enumerated and descriptive knowledge areas (under exam objectives) to assist in identifying and locating them

* A summarized and convenient view showing exam objectives, chapters they are discussed in, associated weights, the number of questions to expect on the real exam, and other useful information

* Separate section on each exam

* 15 chapters in total (8 for LX0-103/101-400 and 7 for LX0-104/102-400)

* Detailed guidance on building lab environment

* 49 tested, hands-on exercises with explanation

* Numerous tested, practical examples for clarity and understanding

* Chapter-end one-sentence review of key topics

* 790 single-response, multiple-response, and fill-in-the-blank practice questions/answers to test your knowledge of the material and exam readiness

* Equally good for self-study and in-class training
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】
A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title

Spatial reasoning, which promises connection across wide areas, is itself ironically often not connected to other areas of knowledge. Thinking with Maps: Understanding the World through Spatialization addresses this problem, developing its argument through historical analysis and cross-disciplinary examples involving maps. The idea of maps here includes traditional cartographic representations of physical environments, but more broadly encompasses the wide variety of ways that visualizations are used across all disciplines to enable understanding, to generate new knowledge, and to effect change.

The idea of thinking with maps is also used broadly. Maps become, not simply one among many items to learn about, but indispensable tools for thinking across every field of inquiry, in a way similar to that of textual and mathematical language. Effective use of maps becomes a way to make knowledge, much as writing or mathematical exploration not only displays ideas, but also creates them. The book shows that maps for thinking are not just a means to improve geographic knowledge, as valuable as that may be. Instead, they provide mechanisms for rejuvenating our engagement with the world, helping us to become more capable of facing our global challenges.

This book has a broader aim: It is fundamentally about general principles of how we learn and know. It calls for a renewed focus on democratic education in which both the means and ends are democratic. Education, just as the political realm, should follow Dewey’s dictum that “democratic ends need democratic methods for their realization.” Maps and mapping are invaluable in that endeavor.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】
This book, first published in 1993, is the first full-length analysis of Samuel Beckett’s later drama in the context of contemporary critical and performance theory. It employs a close, textual examination of the later plays as a springboard for exploring ideas around authority, gender and the ideology of performance. Recent work in the world of critical theory has suggested new ways of looking at performance practice. McMullan argues that, while contemporary theory can deepen our understanding of Beckett’s dramatic practice, his drama places performance in the context of a metaphysical history and a metatheatrical tradition, thereby confronting and provoking some of the central debates in performance studies’ engagement with critical theory.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。
