＜p＞First published in 1964, ＜em＞Greek Tragedy and the Modern World＜/em＞ begins with the question what is Tragedy? Most discussion assumes some essence of Tragedy in certain plays at certain periods, and discussion today centres on whether it is possible, or desirable, for contemporary plays to attend to this essence. There is considerable agreement about what this essence of Tragedy is. But when we examine closely the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides we find that none of the important aspects of this essence of Tragedy applied to them. Greek tragedies are not Tragedy. Yet if we read or perform them, we do discover a special attitude to life which they present.＜/p＞ ＜p＞By examining each of the works of the three Greek masters in turn the author has tried to define what this attitude to life consists of. He then turns his attention to dramatists who have attempted with varying degrees of success, to present aspects of this attitude in contemporary terms: Buchner, Ibsen, Strindberg, Miller, Cocteau, Gide, Giraudoux, Anouilh, Sartre, Gh?on and Eliot. He pays particular attention to such key concepts as ‘myth’ and discusses the various forms of poetic language used by these writers. The author assumes that one cannot criticise literature, still less drama, except in terms of a complete view of life and goes on to examine the claims of different philosophical systems and methods to provide this. He believes that such a view is both possible and desirable in our time and indeed a necessary prerequisite for the emergence of modern tragedy. ＜p＞The book provides a self-contained and complete description of the long time evolution of the solutions to a class of one-dimensional reaction?diffusion equations, in which the diffusion is given by an integral operator. The underlying motivation is the mathematical analysis of models for biological invasions. The model under study, while simple looking, is of current use in real-life situations. Interestingly, it arises in totally different contexts, such as the study of branching random walks in probability theory. While the model has attracted a lot of attention, and while many partial results about the time-asymptotic behaviour of its solutions have been proved over the last decades, some basic questions on the sharp asymptotics have remained unanswered. One ambition of this monograph is to close these gaps. In some of the situations that we envisage, the level sets organise themselves into an invasion front that is asymptotically linear in time, up to a correction that converges exponentially in time to a constant. In other situations that constitute the main and newest part of the work, the correction is asymptotically logarithmic in time. Despite these apparently different behaviours, there is an underlying common way of thinking that is underlined. At the end of each chapter, a long set of problems is proposed, many of them rather elaborate and suitable for master's projects or even the first question in a PhD thesis. Open questions are also discussed. The ideas presented in the book apply to more elaborate systems modelling biological invasions or the spatial propagation of epidemics. The models themselves may be multidimensional, but they all have in common a mechanism imposing the propagation in a given direction; examples are presented in the problems that conclude each chapter. These ideas should also be useful in the treatment of further models that we are not able to envisage for the time being. The study of childhood death is tightly entwined with the concerns of a field that is relatively new to the scholarship of ancient Israel: personhood. An exploration of the concept of personhood is needed in the context of childhood death. In ＜em＞The Dying Child＜/em＞, Kristine Henriksen Garroway argues for a stronger position of the child in current archeological trends. Many archaeologists hesitate to ascribe various domestic objects to children, despite their obvious presence in the ancient home. This functionally ignores an entire class of people in the study of death.
