You will also discover current methods that will improve the lives of suicidal patients, such as talking the patient through the suicidal act and inspiring thought about what would happen and discussing what the patient intends for those that are left behind. Awe and Trembling offers effective techniques that will help you give better care to clients suffering from these difficult disorders.Compelling and informative, Awe and Trembling will help you recognize when panic in your patients is a breakthrough rather than an impending breakdown or collapse. You'll be able to help your patients find new possibilities for a better life, instead of living with the chaos that comes with anxiety. In Awe and Trembling, you'll find ideas that will help you assist your patients in overcoming anxiety and panic, such as:

discovering ways to treat each patient as a living, breathing individual with his or her own personality and treatment needs

examining the therapy session as a vehicle for meditative awakening and deeper self-understanding for your patients

realizing that if you replace the isolation of panic with structure and connection using such techniques as breathing exercises or yoga, panic attacks can be controlled

acknowledging that suffering has potentially liberating as well as debilitating dimensions

discovering an integrated clinical model of understanding that addresses panic and anxiety from an existential perspective

understanding that anxiety and panic often serve as opportunities for clients to examine the conflicts in their lives and within themselves to create a deeper, more authentic existenceAwe and Trembling will show you new ways to help your clients on their journey toward wholeness and a more comfortable, rewarding life. This valuable book will provide you with a unique perspective on panic and awe to help your clients overcome their anxieties and heal themselves and their lives so they can regain their emotional and physical independence.

Scholars question the extent to which current psychiatric classification systems are inadequate for diagnosis, treatment, and research of mental disorders and offer suggestions for improvement.

In this volume, leading philosophers of psychiatry examine psychiatric classification systems, including the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), asking whether current systems are sufficient for effective diagnosis, treatment, and research. Doing so, they take up the question of whether mental disorders are natural kinds, grounded in something in the outside world. Psychiatric categories based on natural kinds should group phenomena in such a way that they are subject to the same type of causal explanations and respond similarly to the same type of causal interventions. When these categories do not evince such groupings, there is reason to revise existing classifications.

The contributors all question current psychiatric classifications systems and the assumptions on which they are based. They differ, however, as to why and to what extent the categories are inadequate and how to address the problem. Topics discussed include taxometric methods for identifying natural kinds, the error and bias inherent in DSM categories, and the complexities involved in classifying such specific mental disorders as “oppositional defiance disorder” and pathological gambling.

Contributors
George Graham, Nick Haslam, Allan Horwitz, Harold Kincaid, Dominic Murphy, Jeffrey Poland, Nancy Nyquist Potter, Don Ross, Dan Stein, Jacqueline Sullivan, Serife Tekin, Peter Zachar

Yet, adversities notwithstanding, they all made monumental contributions that still shape our view on ourselves and the world. This book includes biographies of fifteen modern explorers of the mind who altered the course of history. All of them were wounded healers who made great discoveries while struggling with traumatic life crises and emotional problems in their personal lives. Full of unexpected twists and turns, their life stories alone are worthy of our attention. In linking their maladies with their creativity, showing the vulnerable and human side of these giants, this book makes the greats approachable and illuminates their scientific findings through narrating their life stories.

The author examines both free and guided play through the lenses of class, gender and disability, drawing links between face-to-face and online interactions. As young people increasingly spend time in virtual environments it is important to adjust understandings of how, and when, they engage with learning. The book examines play as a continuum of activities and peer interactions, interrogating what it takes to bridge the gap between academic and wellbeing goals for children with disabilities and disadvantage, as well as those at the intersection with other markers of difference (e.g. gender and race). It will be of interest and value to scholars of play and education, as well as those working with disabled or disadvantaged children.

The book additionally challenges traditional aspects of art therapy practice, particularly the focus on the relational aspect of the intervention and not the art product. Not restrictive or prescriptive and with the potential to be adapted to other interventions, S-BRATA provides an explicit framework for doing art therapy with children on the spectrum that opens the scope of art therapy practice and encourages flexibility and adaptation.

Clinicians, students, and parents alike will benefit from the text’s clear outline for relational development with individuals on the spectrum and its emphasis on the importance of the psycho-emotional health of a child with ASD.
